A letter written to Mr. Wayne Drysdale, Grande Prairie-Wapiti

Mr. Drysdale: I wanted to take a few minutes to discuss the importance of education, and the impact that cuts to education will have. Education is a service that only a government can offer well. So far, I think that Alberta has developed a great system. Government, with all stakeholders in the education system, have given the children of Alberta many choices for the future. Cuts to the system would result in increased classroom size, which can only be to the detriment of students. It would be naive to think that school divisions can avoid increases to the number of students in classrooms, as payroll costs represent more than half of their expenses. The result of the relatively small cut of 80 million this year has already resulted in an increase in the number of students in the classroom. Next year will be much worse. I hope that, in your deliberations, you will come to the conclusion that our children shouldn't be the ones who should have to balance the government's books. Please consider keeping the budget cut to education to a minimum.
