A letter written to Mr. Greg Weadick, Lethbridge-West

Dear Mr. Weadick: I am writing to express my concerns about the cutbacks which have already happened in health, social services and education. I am very concerned about the announced plans for further cuts. There have already been cuts of teacher's aids and assistants. When there is less support for vulnerable students, they do not do as well in school. They pay later and we as a province pay later. They get less education in the long run and they are less prepared for the job market. In addition, students who are more able are held back because the teachers need to spend more time with the less able. PDD funding has been cut. clients receive less alotment of time per person. Eligibility has been restricted. The people who are trained in the use of IQ testing tell us that it is not a good measure of ability to function in this world. Yet, IQ has become virtually the only eligibility criteria for PDD. People who have other barriers such as mental illness in addition to developmental delay are now not allowed to access this service. To summarize, I am very concerned about the cuts and the direction that your party is taking in these matters. I am aware that as a percentage of GDP Alberta is taxed at a much lower rate than any other province. We are not going broke as Mr. Morton would have us believe. Sincerely your constituent Roger Durupt
